Leaving accommodation early

This page describes the steps you need to follow depending on whether you are leaving university managed accommodation or private sector accommodation early.

Leaving university managed accommodation early

Withdrawing from university

If you withdraw or intermit from your studies, we will terminate your accommodation agreement once you have formally withdrawn and returned your keys and termination form to reception. You can download a termination form (pdf) here or collect one from the Accommodation Office in the Manor House on the Moulsecoomb campus.

A £50 termination fee will be charged and this should be paid within 30 days of it being raised.

Moving out early but continuing your studies

If you decide to move out so that you can live elsewhere but you are not withdrawing from the university, you will remain liable for the rent until the end of the contract unless a suitable replacement student is found.

In order to terminate your agreement please complete a termination form and return it to reception along with your key when you move out. You will continue to be charged rent for the room unless another student agrees to take over the contract. If another student moves in we will end your liability from the date that the new student moves in. In these circumstances a £50 termination fee will be charged and this should be paid within 30 days of it being raised.

Alternatively, you can look for a replacement student yourself by advertising the room on our Facebook page, for example. Please note that in order to be eligible the student must be a full-time University of Brighton student who is not already living in university managed accommodation. Once you provide their details the student will be debt and reference checked and we will notify you if they take over your contract. In these circumstances a £25 termination fee will be charged.

Termination fees and rental refunds

If you have overpaid any rent we will refund this to you less the termination fee. Any refunds will be made to the bank account held on our records, usually the card used to pay for your rent, so please take time to ensure that these details are correct. You can do so by contacting the finance department on 01273 642740.

Please note that we expect you to thoroughly clean your room before moving out. Failure to clean your room may result in end of tenancy cleaning and rubbish clearance charges.

Leaving private sector accommodation early

If you plan to move out early you should contact your landlord or agent for advice. You may advertise your room on our Facebook page. Please note that this is also applicable to House Share Scheme properties.
