Primary and secondary schools

Supporting our commitment to widening participation and local communities, our outreach team works to raise young people’s awareness of higher education, and the choices open to them.

From primary to secondary schools, our interactive activities and events enable pupils who may not have considered going to university to see it as an achievable option. Our activities also support schools in meeting the Gatsby 7 benchmark.

Our team offers interactive, inclusive activities for all pupils at partner schools from years 6 to 11, as well as for their parents and carers, encouraging participation from groups under-represented at university.

What we do: widening participation, primary and secondary activities, advice for parents.

Key Stage 3 resources: virtual tours and raising aspirations.

Key Stage 4 resources: virtual tours, study skills and apprenticeships.

Subject choices: student stories and course videos.

Meet the team to discuss how we can work with you

I liked that you can complete the work at your own pace at a time that suits you. The website is very easy to use and the videos were short and enjoyable.

What we do

Widening participation

We partner with schools that may have a higher percentage of pupils living in a postcode where people are less likely to go to university. We work collaboratively with schools to tailor activities and events for pupils and their families/carers through different stages of their education to support their progression to university.

Who we support
We work with all pupils in years 6 to 11, and with their families. We offer activities and events to explore the opportunities that a university education offers, to raise aspirations of studying at university and to help smooth the transition into higher education, particularly for pupils from under-represented backgrounds.

We also offer practical information, advice and guidance to families/carers supporting pupils applying to university who may not have first-hand experience of the process.

What does the widening participation programme include?
We offer in-person activities and resources to eligible students that include:

  • Interactive presentations and talks with staff and student ambassadors which aims to introduce university, the courses available and the benefit of a university education.
  • Mentoring and events which answer your questions about university and how to make an informed choice about your education options.

Benefits of our programme

  • The University of Brighton directly supports our partner schools with Gatsby Benchmark 7 – by the age of 16, every pupil should have had a meaningful encounter with providers of the full range of learning opportunities.
  • Activities tailored to individual schools.
  • A partnership valued by the OFSTED inspection process.

To book onto events or for more information visit our events page.

Primary schools

We are currently developing our programme of attainment raising activities for primary school students. More information to follow.

Secondary schools

Our team works closely in partnership with secondary schools to provide training, information, advice and guidance for teachers, and tailor activities that raise awareness of the opportunities arising from university study.

Next steps activities are aimed at pupils in key stage 3. By providing firsthand experience and real examples of university life, the activities aim to increase young people’s confidence. We introduce the academic, social, economic and personal benefits of studying at university and the career opportunities it offers.

Looking forward activities encourage pupils at key stage 4 to consider higher education as an option, and help make informed choices about their future. Activities and events build confidence and encourage pupils to consider applying to and studying at university – from financial support to learning style and transferable skills, as well as introducing the broad range of subjects available.

Our student ambassadors bring a personal touch, sharing anecdotes and experiences.

Pre-16 events and activities online include:

  • Mentoring
  • University experience project
  • Study skills
  • Assemblies
  • Saturday clubs

To book onto events or for more information, please visit our events page or email outreach@brighton.ac.uk.

White board with sticky notes
It’s great to see the children develop an awareness and greater sense of curiosity. Over time more hands have been raised in terms of those wanting to go to university. It has also encouraged our children to think more about what they want from the future.

Apprenticeships

A traditional degree does not suit everyone. The University of Brighton's degree apprenticeships offer more practical, employer-led training.

These programmes are designed by employers for employers, and meet the needs of business and public-sector employers while improving staff productivity, development and retention within the United Kingdom.

To find a full list of what we offer employers, visit our section on Higher and Degree Apprenticeships.

To find out more about the journey to apprenticeships, including student stories, visit the Sussex Learning Network.

Student stories

School and college students find it very helpful and informative to hear about university students' first-hand experiences on their chosen pathways.

Experience a day in the life of a student: meet James, one of our teacher training students as he gives us an inside guide on studying Primary Education with QTS at the Falmer campus and shows us what it's like to live in student accommodation.

We also have student stories and interviews on a wide range of subjects and courses:

  • architecture
  • business management
  • fine art printmaking
  • medicine
  • pharmacy
  • physiotherapy
  • primary education
  • sociology.

GCSE options

For most students, choosing their GCSE options is the first big academic decision to make at secondary school.

Advice on the GCSE option process

To help students to make the right choice, we asked two current University of Brighton students to offer advice and guidance on the GCSE options process by sharing their own experiences and reflections.
